Truckee River Rafting — Two Runs, Every Level

The Truckee is the only river that flows out of Lake Tahoe. Float the scenic family stretch from Tahoe City, or run the Class III whitewater canyon near Truckee. Both are 20–30 minutes from the cabin in Olympic Valley.

The only river that flows out of Lake Tahoe

The Truckee starts at the outlet in Tahoe City, runs northwest through Olympic Valley's neighboring terrain, passes through downtown Truckee, and eventually reaches Pyramid Lake in Nevada. It's one of the most accessible river trips in California — no long drive to the put-in, no shuttle nightmare, and multiple outfitters operating right on the water.

The character of the river changes as you move downstream. Near Tahoe City it's calm, clear, and tree-lined — perfect for floating. Below Boca Reservoir the river drops into a remote canyon and picks up real whitewater energy. Two different experiences, same river, same basecamp.

Class I–IIFamily Float~12 min from the cabin

    Tahoe City to River Ranch

    2–3 hours
    5 miles
    Ages 2+
    Self-guided

The most popular float in the Tahoe area. Put in near the lake outlet in Tahoe City and drift downstream through pine forest and meadow to the River Ranch Lodge. Calm water with a handful of small riffles — relaxed enough for young kids, scenic enough for everyone else. Outfitters provide the raft, paddles, life jackets, and a shuttle back to your car.

    • Shuttle included from all major outfitters
    • Family-friendly — minimum age 2 years
    • Stops possible at River Ranch for lunch or a beer
    • Peak season: late May through early September

Host's note: This is the one most of our guests do. Easy morning out — load the car, drive to Tahoe City, float for a few hours, grab lunch at River Ranch, and be back at the cabin by mid-afternoon. Perfect day trip when you want water but not the lake.

Class II–III+Whitewater~30 min from the cabin

    Boca to Floriston

    Half day
    ~8 miles
    Ages 7+
    Guided only

The Truckee River's whitewater stretch, downstream from Boca Reservoir near Truckee. Guided trips navigate a series of Class II–III+ rapids through a remote canyon — more technical, more adrenaline, and a genuinely different experience from the Tahoe City float. Flow conditions depend on snowpack and dam releases, so this run is most reliable in June and early July.

    • Guided trips only — experienced guides navigate the rapids
    • Best flows in June and early July (peak snowmelt)
    • Remote canyon with no road access mid-run
    • Minimum age 7, moderate fitness recommended

Host's note: If your group has older kids or adults who want something with more punch, this is the move. Book in advance — guided trips fill up fast in June. Combine it with the Tahoe City float on a separate day for two very different river experiences on the same trip.

    A note on flows

Both runs depend on snowpack and dam releases. In drought years or by late August, the Tahoe City float can run low — still floatable, but slower. The Boca-Floriston whitewater run is more sensitive to flow; outfitters may cancel or modify trips when levels are too low. Check with your outfitter before booking if you're visiting late in the season.

Olympic Valley as your river basecamp

The cabin sits in Olympic Valley, 20 minutes from the Tahoe City put-in and 30 from the Boca-Floriston launch. Plenty of room to rinse off, hang wet gear, and regroup between days on the water.

The 4-bedroom layout sleeps 8, which works well for the groups that typically make the trip out for a river day — families, friend groups, groups combining rafting with hiking or lake days.

Truckee River rafting — quick questions

What guests ask before planning a river day.

The Tahoe City put-in is about 12 minutes from the cabin in Olympic Valley. The Boca-Floriston whitewater section starts near Boca Reservoir, about 30 minutes away via Highway 267 through Truckee.

Tahoe City to River Ranch is the right call for families with young kids, groups with mixed experience levels, or anyone who wants a relaxed half-day on the water. Boca to Floriston is better for groups of older kids and adults who want actual whitewater — expect to get wet and work a little.

Late June through August for the Tahoe City float — flows are reliable and the weather is warm. The Boca-Floriston whitewater run is best in June and early July when snowmelt keeps flows high enough for good rapids. By late August some years the river runs lower.

For the Tahoe City float, outfitters provide the raft, paddles, and life jackets. Bring a change of clothes, water shoes or sandals you don't mind getting wet, sunscreen, and a dry bag for your phone. For the Boca-Floriston run, your guide company will give you a full gear list — a wetsuit may be recommended in early season.

Yes — they're different enough that they're worth doing both. A common combination: Boca-Floriston guided whitewater on day one, Tahoe City float as a relaxed follow-up on day two. The cabin is well-positioned for both.

Yes — the Truckee River is the only river that flows out of Lake Tahoe, starting at the outlet in Tahoe City. The Tahoe City float starts right there. Downstream it passes through Truckee, past Boca and Stampede reservoirs, and eventually into Pyramid Lake in Nevada.
