Why staying in Olympic Valley changes the WSER experience

Most WSER lodging options are in Truckee, Tahoe City, or Kings Beach — 20 to 40 minutes from the start. The night before a 100-miler, those 40 minutes at 4 AM matter. This cabin is in the valley itself, less than a mile from where the race begins.

For crew, the location is equally useful. Olympic Valley is the natural staging point before the course heads into the Sierra. Crew can walk to the start, see their runner off, load the car, and be at Robinson Flat before most crews have finished parking at the start.

WSER start line: ~2 min drive
Robinson Flat (mile 30): ~45 min drive
Foresthill (mile 62): ~1 hr drive
    Auburn finish: ~1.5 hrs drive
Free parking for 3 crew vehicles

How WSER crews use this cabin

Based on how past guests have run their race weekends from here.

    Night before

Everyone sleeps at the cabin. Runner rests, crew preps drop bags.

    4:30 AM

Walk or drive 2 minutes to the Olympic Valley start area. No parking scramble.

    5:00 AM

Race starts. Crew loads cars and heads to early aid stations.

    During race

Crew drives the course. Cabin stays as home base — return between aid station duties to rest and restock.

    Post-race

Runner finishes in Auburn. Drive back, recover at the cabin. Space for the whole crew to decompress.

Built for a race group, not a hotel room

WSER crews need space to coordinate, prep food, and rest between aid station duties. A hotel room doesn't cut it for a group of 6–8.

Runner gets their own room the night before. Crew splits the rest.

    Parking for 3 vehicles

Free, on-property. Most WSER crews run 2 cars minimum.

    Full kitchen

Prep race-day fuel, recovery food, and crew meals without relying on restaurants at 3 AM.

    Sleeps 8 comfortably

Runner, 2–3 pacers, 3–4 crew — one booking, everyone together.

WSER weekend books out early — plan ahead

The Western States lottery results drop in December. That's when most crews start looking for lodging. In Olympic Valley, the best options are gone within weeks. Check availability for your race year now — or get on the calendar before demand peaks.

    WSER lodging — quick questions

What runners and crews ask before booking race weekend.

About 2 minutes by car, less than a mile. The race starts in Olympic Valley near the 1960 Winter Olympics site. The cabin is in the valley — crew and runners can walk to the start area in the dark without driving.

It's one of the best options in the valley for a full crew. Four bedrooms means the runner can have their own room the night before, crew members share the others, and everyone has a full kitchen and living room to coordinate in. We've hosted multiple WSER groups — crews typically use it as a basecamp for the first half of the race before driving the course.

Yes. The cabin is centrally located for the first part of the course. Crews often leave for Robinson Flat or Michigan Bluff, then return to the cabin for food and rest before heading back out. The full kitchen makes it easy to prep food without relying on restaurants.

Up to 8 guests across 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, split across two levels. For WSER, that typically means 1 runner, 2–3 pacers, and 2–4 crew members — a full team, comfortably.

WSER weekend (late June) is one of the highest-demand windows of the year in Olympic Valley. Book as soon as you know your runner is in — ideally 6–12 months out. The lottery results in December are when most groups start looking.

Yes. June also includes the Broken Arrow Skyrace (June 18–21) and TrailCon (June 22–24), which draw thousands of trail runners to Olympic Valley the week before Western States. Many guests book a longer June stay to cover multiple events.

Free parking for up to 3 cars at the cabin. On race weekend, parking in the valley fills early — having a fixed home base with guaranteed spots is a real advantage for a crew running multiple vehicles.
